Great article: Owls on the OBX

Just saw this, published a few days ago: https://outerbanksvoice.com/2018/01/10/outer-banks-birding-owls-are-awesome-misunderstood/ If you're into birds and/or the natural world around us, it's worth reading. Jeff Lewis starts out with year round owl residents and then mentions some transients. smiley with shades

Good article. Thanks for posting.

I'm near preserved land here in MA. A hear barred owls and screech owls when I'm on the porch having half a cigar at night.

An aggressive barred owl knocked down a cross-country skier here in Maine recently: https://www.necn.com/news/new-england/Get-Out-of-Here-Aggressive-Owl-Attacks-Man-Skiing-468856763.html . smiley

Owl Power is a great episode of nature from a few years ago. Check to see if the full episode is available online in your area. Great show..

Went to a presentation on owls at a local library last year. The last owl they showed was a saw-whet owl. It received a collective "awwww" from the audience since it was so small, as mentioned in the article. smiley

We have Owls up here in CT, and I find them fascinating. I've watched them swoop down and grab mice in the yard, so cool! I don't remember seeing them in Hatteras, but excited to! I always wanted one as a pet after fostering an African Grey. But you just can't, while there are pet owls, it's usually temporary foster until they're healthy.

Glad you all enjoyed the article. Owls are very cool. Paul, I am completely with you on the "aww" about the tiny saw whet owl.

My own greatest sighting was years ago on a Christmas Count out at Jones Beach - a stunning Snowy owl sitting amidst the dune grass...and then we had the good luck of seeing a Long-eared owl in a pine...

Grim_Smoker - I bet you have a bunch up in CT. We lived up in Litchfield county for a few years and used to listen to the Great Horned owls call to each other across the Housatonic.

The Outer Banks area is such a super place to see birds at all different times of the year. smiley with shades

We have the Great Horned and Barn as far as I know. They hang out in the trees just off our deck. When I go out to smoke sometimes they let me walk right up to them. So cool!

Also, we're in Fairfield county. Not far away!

Birds are cool and all, but having the beaches shut down because of Plovers...**** them! lol
