Summer Beach Crowds Rodanthe Vs Hatteras Village

Hello, First of all I would like to say my thoughts are with anyone effected with flooding in the OBX. The OBX has held a special place in my heart for around 15yrs. Now It has touched my kids life and wouldn't even think of taking them anywhere else than the OBX for Vacation.
My question is can anyone tell me how much of a difference in the beach crowds in Rodanthe Vs HV? We have been saying in HV for as long as I can remember. I got a notification from Midgett that the small OF Rental we been saying at (Searider) will no longer be available as the property is being sold tore down and a bigger house is being built on the land. This little house was so amazing and we have made some of the best memories of our lives there. We stay in Rodanathe every Thanksgiving but never stayed so far north in the summer. Any input would be very helpful. With our budget we are trying to figure out is it worth getting a house closer to the ocean in Rodanthe or stick with HV with a house few lots back. My mother has issue walking long distances which plays a lot in our decision making. Thanks

You didn't mention what month you plan on going. We stay in Rodanthe the 1st or 2nd week of September and have never had a problem with crowds. There's not that many houses to make for a crowded beach. The only exception might be by the condos or the campgrounds.

Hello MD,

We were booked for 3 week in July. I am currently looking into houses near the pier. Thank You

You'll probably find the most concentration of people by the KOA and Camp Hatteras campgrounds since there are a lot of visitors in a relatively small area. I've stayed several times at the Ocean Waves campground just to the south of them, and the view north always has a large group of canopies and people, but only right in front of their properties. Outside of that, the beaches are relatively wide open. We were there again the first week of August.

There's some really nice houses near the pier. We normally stay on Ocean Drive which is a block south of the pier. A few of the members here own houses right there. You might want to check the owners page of this forum. Good luck and let us know which house you picked.

We’re right at the end of Ocean Drive by the pier. Last time we came in July there were people but still enough room for groups to spread out and not be on top of each other. We’re one back and have a 4 bedroom place but there’s a smaller house right in front of us that rents through Midgett as well (I think they rent through Midgett anyway).

That one is a bit north of us but right in the same area. Beaches aren’t really crowded in the summer so that’s a huge bonus to us.

Rodanthe has been our "go-to" village for the past 25 years. We occasionally stay in other areas (Kitty Hawk, South Nags Head, Avon, Waves), but we keep returning to Rodanthe. It has just the right mix of restaurants and shops without the crush of the more populated areas. We generally stay on Ocean Drive, as someone else mentioned, near the pier, oceanfront or 1 lot back. We've stayed in huge houses and in small cottages, depending on size of group. We've stayed in houses on Beulah Oneal Drive twice, but not lately. I would be careful because that road can be impassable without 4-wheel drive. Once the road starts to get bad (big holes that you need to skirt around), it may not get fixed until later in the season. I haven't been there lately so would ask for an update from Midgett or a local. Very nice, quiet area but there are a few roads that just get torn up every year...

Rodanthe beaches aren’t crowded but they can be narrow. And rough surt. If you want private beaches Pea Island is only 5 minutes away, we usually stay at the beach in Rodanthe when the wind is from the west, head to PI when it blows off the ocean due to flys. Great area.
