Travel around Washington

Hello.

Usually I travel 81 south -> 66 East -> 17 to Fredricksburg, VA but travel during the day to be there around 5-6 pm. This year I am not leaving Ithaca, NY until around 4pm. Google Maps wants to take me around DC via 270/495/95 and anticipate being there about 9:30 pm or so. Since I have never driven this route, can anyone give information on how the traffic is at this time of night on a Friday?

My original route adds about 20-30 mins, however if traffic is good, I can save some time going around DC. Also, the HOV lanes could save even more, albeit, at a price.

Just trying to get an idea if this is a good one to use the outer beltway, or stay my tried and true course.

Please let me know your thoughts.

I would keep going the way you usually go Traffic on 495 and 95 is never good , Just takes one accident to back up for miles

Traffic is usually light that time. But all it takes is one accident or construction to slow you down. Plenty of bailout routes along the way until you get between Woodbridge and Fredricksburg.

930 PM going around DC on 95/495 isn't usually that bad... yes.... there can be accidents anywhere at anytime regardless of your route and Fredericksburg has grown and has their fair share)... use Waze for alternate routes if necessary... and yes the express lanes are an option if required.

When our son lived in Ithaca and we picked him up on the way down , leaving from Buffalo we went around Philly, across the DelMarVa pinnisula then across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This was a good way to avoid DC which we do almost every trip unless we’re on our way home and leaving from Nags Head super early in the am.

I live, and work, in the DMV - barring anything catastrophic you'd be good to go at that time of night... just make sure you're clear of DC by the time the bars close!

I live in Alexandria and make frequent trips to Richmond Andy points in between. I agree that by 9:30pm traffic will be fine, any day of the week.

If you have EZ pass you may get to use the thru lanes on 270. They can help get away from some of the trucks and other slow movers. Getting around DC is always a crap shoot. Someone mentioned WAZE - that app can be very valuable and can help you decide if you need to modify your route. Good luck! Keep you eye on the prize of crossing the bridge and be careful!

ive been on 270/495 at two in the morning and have been sitting in back ups. I avoid DC at all costs.

Actually 270 doesn't have toll lanes. The beltway does, and I-95 from Springfield to Quantico does as well...they are “high occupancy/toll” (HOT) lanes. At the hours the poster is driving those lanes are largely unnecessary. They’re variable rate, so if the rates are low (smooth sailing) or really high (HOT lanes are starting to back up, possibly due to an accident in the HOT lanes) they’re best avoided. Unless you’re in the lanes under HOV mode (you can buy a EZpass flex transponder in VA that allows you to self identify as HOV-3 so you don’t have to pay the toll) it doesn’t really make sense to pay money to drive 30 feet away from free lanes traveling the same speed.

Sorry Brad for listing the wrong road number. I know that we leave G-burg, go thru Frederick and eventually are on 270/495. The pay lanes help around Tyson Corner and 95S. Just trying to help those who have to get to 95 from the North.
