For an ORV permit? No.

I have the permit. Just wondering if the NPS is going to want to see the jack since it's required.

RE: Jack, Board, tire gauge, Shovel

I wouldn't worry about it. It's more for your safety and in case you get stuck. I've never been asked to show that stuff and don't know anyone that has either. Just have the permit handy, but I've never had that checked either. Air down and have some fun.

Whats the website that shows what ramps are open?

The latest is usually posted on their Facebook page.

Not required, but in addition to your items, I carry a double loop ended tow rope, and two six foot carpet strips to put under tires for traction.

Go North, the 4wd dive area is much more satisfying. Last time I was there no permit required. Depends on the tires too, I'm running 35" mud tires with good tread and didn't have any issues, did not have the need to air down.

It's really cool driving up north.

More satisfying??? Not everyone has oversize tires on their vehicle and if you don't air down, you are just inviting trouble. Seen way too many vehicles buried up to their frames and when asked if they aired down, they all said no. Better to play it safe than to pay a hefty tow bill.

I like the fishing on Hatteras better. I always air down; even if you have large tires and don't need to, you cause washboards for other people coming behind you. Last I've heard there is a fee to park

RE: Jack, Board, tire gauge, Shovel

There is no fee to park at any of the lots in front of the access ramps, never has been.

I was speaking of Corolla beaches, I assumed that is what was meant by go north.

Same here. It's just a good idea just in case. I've never been stuck (knock on wood) but I'm sure it's not cheap to get a commercial tow if there's no one around to help you and you don't have the gear to dig yourself out.

I did have a scare in November coming back from the point like an idiot using the beach side track. The back end of my F-150 started moving off towards the right as the ledge was falling away. I crawled out of it though and took the inside road each time after.

did not have the need to air down.

So you're one those that create the corduroy effect on the beach. By not airing the rest of us driving on the beach get to experience the teeth jarring rumble effect. Please show some consideration to others and air down, the rest of us will thank you and not curse you.
